We recently experienced a long outage due to the well published Amazon Web Services service disruption. Our outage occured on 21st April when our servers hosted at one of the Amazon Web Services hosting facilities in East Coast of America became unavailable. Whilst the problem lasted for 4 days for us, a quick return to service was not possible for us due to a number of reasons.
Whilst the cloud computing has given us an advantage from Day 1, this outage showed a number of problems associated with our use of the Amazon Web Services. Notably:
1. Our procedures for recovery was not tested in anger before, and had many errors.
2. Inadequate redundancy in our server deployment
3. Use of outsourcing instead of in-house product development team
